Are tap and bottled water created equal? And about reverse osmosis or purified water?
It's no secret that contaminants and pollutants compromise our water supply. Water service providers use chlorine and chloramine to disinfect tap water. We don't know what the bottled water companies do. And reverse osmosis removes the minerals our bodies need to stay healthy. The same applies to any other purified water.
That's why I drink alkaline ionized water. This is water produced by a water ionizer. Within this machine, tap water undergoes the process of electrolysis. First, tap water goes through a filter to remove chlorine and sediment. Then that filtered water moves through several electrode plates and membranes. With an electric charge at the end of each plate, hydrogen and hydroxide ions separate. A hydrogen ion has a positive charge while a hydroxide ion has a negative charge. Thus, a hydrogen ion is acidic and a hydroxide ion is alkaline. Membranes separate these two waters and dispenses them through different hoses. One hose dispenses alkaline ionized water while the other dispenses acidic ionized water.
But how is this possible since water is an insulator and not a conductor of electricity? The minerals present in water conduct the electricity. Minerals such as calcium, copper, magnesium, and sodium. These minerals are positive metal ions which mean they have a positive charge. During the process of electrolysis, the cathode attracts these minerals. The cathode has a negative charge and thus gives electrons to these minerals. Furthermore, these minerals have positive impacts on our health. So we want them in our water.
That's why some bottled water companies add minerals to their water. Let's take Dasani, for example. Dasani, a Coca-Cola Company, uses reverse osmosis to filter tap water. Then they add the following ingredients for taste:
Magnesium sulfate
Potassium chloride
Salt
A water ionizer filters tap water and ionizes the minerals found in the water. It does not add any ingredients or other additives. Furthermore, when you buy a water ionizer you pay for it once. You do not need to keep getting more water ionizers every so often. When you buy bottled water, you will forever buy bottled water.
